My guess is that it won't happen until 07

I have my money on 06. Tiger was an especially API-heavy release. It introduced Spotlight, Dashboard, and Automator, which all depend on developers to extend them. In addition, it introduced other technologies of interest to developers, such as Core Image and Core Video.

If we look at the Leopard rumors, we can see the following features being feasible:

    *Unified Interface
    *Windows Virtualization
    *New Finder
    *BitTorrent
    *iChat with Phone Calling
    *Maps application
    *Random Application Updates
    *Improved Speech capabilities
    *Collaboration API ("Core Collaboration?")

Now lets narrow that down to features of interest to developers:

    *Unified Interface
    *BitTorrent
    *Collaboration API

Not such big changes. Unless there are some wild cards in there (and I hope there will be!) that are developer-centric, this is a pretty easy release for developers to swallow. This will be a consumer-centric release.

Yes...Photoshop can only run under Rosetta on the Intel machines...there's no universal version of it.

It was just the performance was dam quick I just wasn't sure if there was an Intel version out or not, either way that is killer performance.

And once again the Apple fans will turn out to have been correct.

Really? The posters on here that say there was no issue are correct?

I guess Apple fixing certain bugs related to this is whimtime.

I guess it's all a matter of what part of the issue you deem important. The tracking, the retention or the ability to opt out

Edit: Please ignore this post, I can't count!!!

If you buy a Xeon 5160 (3.0GHz) at the moment they are £570. Apple are charging £530 to upgrade from Xeon 5150 (2.66GHz) to the Xeon 5160. Bearing in mind that you can probably sell the original 2.66Gz chip for around £300, it would be cheaper to buy the lower spec Mac Pro and upgrade yourself.

Forgive the £ for those that think in $.

Sorry not all of us are blessed with 'night vision' I dunno about your advanced genetics, but using my MBA on minimum setting will give me a headache in about 3 minutes.

Majority of laptops don't have a BL keyboard yet the majority of people still manage just fine despite not having it or night vision.

Here's hoping you're right. I think including 512 MB of RAM standard would be a bit of a slap in the face if Apple is releasing these supposedly "advanced" machines. What kind of advanced PowerMac has only 512 MB of RAM standard? ;)

It would be ridiculous if it came with just 512 mb's of ram...

Steve Jobs-"The New Octa-Core Mac Pro with 512 mb's of ram" It just doesn't fit...

Im waiting til June, if iphone 5 is delayed then i will jump to a nice android smartphone. Many people forget that cellular market has changed a lot and now competition is harder than before, there are nice alternatives, very nice ones.

Just what do all you whiners NEED in a smartphone that you can't wait for a 3 month "delay" in release of a phone? Cracks me up.

And if any of you actually switch, I'll bet 2 months after the release of the iPhone 5 you'll be so jealous of its superiority over your current smartphone that you'll end up coming back to Apple. Apple knows this, which is why they laugh in your face.

Apple iPhones are everywhere. I think I saw a gal in line at the supermarket on food stamps whip out an iPhone.

And over 95% of iPhone owners are "dumb" users. They don't visit sites like this and if they are on iPhone 3G will probably upgrade to iPhone 4 if that is all that is available in June/July. And they will be happy. They will hear a little about iPhone 5 in Sept. but won't really care. That's the pulse of the American people. Geeks on this forum are in the minority.

Does it even MATTER if Apple keeps up? Do we actually WANT Apple to release a new computer every month when Intel bumps up their chips a few megahertz?

See, it's easy to get lost in the specs war. The Mac Pros came out and I was salivating, even though I have a dual 2.0GHz G5 sitting at home. And then one day, as I was editing some HD footage, it occurred ot me that my G5 here - my now outdated G5 - was editing 1080p high-def footage without so much as a flinch. It was SO fast it was not even necessary at all.

So I really have to ask - does Apple really need to get into that stupid-ass PC specs war? Is it really hurting you guys that Apple has been slow to update? Are you really doing tasks that the current computer lineup cannot do?

AMEN!!!! This whole thread has the tone of a spoiled 13 year old's "I want" tirade. All the benchmarks show little difference between Merom and what you can buy today...and the 64 bit argument is really moot for most users because....(ready for it)....it's a laptop! Very few will have more than 2GB RAM on it anyway, and addressing larger RAM partitions is the #1 64 bit advantage.

    A "bug" right? ;)

I thought they said that there was not any concerns?

There was never anything to worry about. However, paranoia strikes, everyone goes mad without any reason, so what is Apple supposed to do? Note that the same paranoia has been striking against Windows phones as well now (look at theregister.com), with dozens and dozens of clueless idiots complaining that Windows is even worse than Apple, or equally bad as Apple, or almost as bad as Apple, based on the fact that Windows is using the same crowd sourcing that Apple (and Google) uses, and a general misunderstanding of what is actually happening.

The only actual _real_ privacy problem that I have seen so far is that Google's database (they have a database of WiFi locations, just as Apple, Windows, Skyhook, and I think Nokia) is not secured enough and lets anyone get access to lookup the location of any WiFi base station (my home network is located within about 100 meters or about 20 homes; the centre of the circle is quite exactly where I live). Which means if for some reason you want to go into hiding, you better don't take your WiFi router with you. (People got all paranoid about the iPhone, but anyone trying to find you first has to find your iPhone, and usually that means they've found you as well, whether there is any data on the phone or not). This problem with Google's database affects _anyone_ with a WiFi router in the whole world, whether they have any phone or not.

How much is it costing me to send the data to apple so they can crowdsource locations for everyone? I doubt AT&T isn't counting this towards data use.

Apple sends this preferably over WiFi, in which case it costs you almost nothing. But you have benefits: Your GPS works immediately when turned on instead of taking up to several minutes (like the bloody TomTom in my car does, which is pretty annoying at times), and you can find yourself quite precisely on a map in the middle of London where GPS just doesn't work because of all the tall buildings; New Yorkers probably appreciate it just as much.

Interesting news, but the bit about booting competitors is downright disgusting.
It's not like they threatened anyone. They likely went to the organizers and said "We'd like to make a really cool announcement at your event but we'd need most of your presentation and sponsorship space to do it." SuperMeet said sure, Apple paid, and here we are. It's not like the other sponsors didn't get their money back (I'm assuming.)

Yeah, I'm sure that's what happened...if they were dealing with the Apple of 5 years ago. But, no, we now see today's Apple in action. The same Apple that stole that hot chick's iAd app idea, the same that "asked" Toyota to remove the Scion ad from Cydia, the same that sent out their own ninja's to search some dude's house for the iPhone 4 prototype, etc.

A bit pointless given that no software utilises the extra cores yet.

Not true, according to the article. They said it wasn't easy, but they were able to max out all 8 cores. You can see the Activity Monitor graph all filled up.

It would be nice if 10.5 would allow a more 'blind' method to utilize these cores, versus having programmers specificly program for multi-core. Now that would be extremely helpful and allow a more simultanous workflow.

That's how it is now, at least with multiple apps. I bet it's possible to program for an unspecified number of multiple cores, and there may be apps doing it already.

I was interested to see that they were unable to max out CPU utilization on all 8 cores in the system. I hope it's due to the software these days not being ready to fully utilize more than one or two cores and not due to OSX's ability to scale to larger core counts. Since that's obviously where we're heading. Does anyone know about the potential for scalability of OSX to large numbers of CPU's/cores? I know some *nix varieties and BSD varieties do this really well, but one wonders if they were thinking this far in the future when they developed OSX. It'll be interesting to see...

Read the article again, they WERE able to max them out, just not easily. Based on that, OSX seems to be able to scale already. Developers just need to start writing apps that are more MP friendly.

Does he feel same-sex attractions or doesn't he? The reporter says that the priest is "gay." The article tells that the priest denied both accusations. If he denied both accusations, he denied that he was gay.

The reporter or the college goofed. Being "gay" isn't contrary to Catholic teachings. Living a "gay lifestyle" is contrary to them.

What is a "gay lifestyle" exactly? We get up, take a shower, brush our teeth, go to work and come home to our families just like anyone else.

I don't believe the mercury engine works on anything but nVidia cards.

    Close, but not quite right.

The Mercury Playback Engine is composed of 3 things:
    1. 64 Bit Application
    2. Multithreaded Application
    3. Processing of some things using CUDA (an NVIDIA card)

If you don't have a CUDA based video card, you still have the Mercury Playback Engine (software) available. What you probably meant to say is that hardware acceleration for the Mercury Playback Engine is not available unless it's a CUDA card.

    More info: http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2011/02/cuda-mercury-playback-engine-and-adobe-premiere-pro.html

    John Gruber's take:

So heres the Android bait-and-switch laid bare. Android was open only until it became popular and handset makers dependent upon it. Now that Google has the handset makers by the balls, Android is no longer open and Google starts asserting control.

Andy Rubin, Vic Gundotra, Eric Schmidt: shameless, lying hypocrites, all of them.

    Can't say I disagree.

    What would be competitive:

    SNIP
iMac 2.4-2.66Ghz Conroe, X1800 and LCD res upgrade
Mac Mini: 1.83Ghz Allendale (going to be much cheaper than Merom, so if they can they will put one in) Integrated graphics
    Mac Pro: Dual 2.0-3.0Ghz Xeons

I agree, it would be really good if Apple did what they did with the Mac Pro, and made sure the next updates used the best appropriate tech available.

Alternatively, they should release a grunty half sized Mac Pro for those who need more power and customisation, but dont need a full on work station.

    This guy's website is hilarious.

The biggest corporations in the States fear us because we tell it like it is. Weve sued corporations and brands that are household names, like Kraft, Oscar Mayer, and Hormel, and weve sued them for nasty misbehavior, like fraud, lying and cheating.

All too often in corporate cultures a profit motive overrides principled behavior, and corporations find themselves testing just how much they can get away with before a critical mass of people complain. Historically, corporations have targeted relatively small extra fees, or unclear charges that they can levy on many or all of their customers. Their calculation is something like: if we can make $5 extra on each customer, then after a million transactions, weve made $5 million extra. The problem arises when those charges are deceptive or otherwise unfair to customers.

Corporations rely on the small individual harm to each customer serve as a deterrent. Such small amounts are sometimes not even worth the time it would take to call the company to complain. Those who do call to fight the unfair charge will often obtain the result they wanted: the corporation will correct that single customers account, maybe refunding the $5. But it will not correct any elses account. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and quiets down, while the corporation retains the other $4,999,995 it effectively ripped-off from its customers.

Class actions can be an effective way to force corporations to repay the entire $5 million, in our example, by allowing one of the squeaky wheels to represent everyone who got ripped-off by the companys same unethical practice. The people who got ripped-off are class members, represented by the squeaky wheel, who is the class representative.

At the Mayer Law Group, we like squeaky wheels. We stand for whats right and demand that companies behave ethically. If you are aware of corporate misbehavior if youre a squeaky wheel then wed like to hear from you. Shoot us a quick email or give us a call.

Squeaky wheels who have served as class representatives have often been awarded payment for their service. It is not uncommon for a class representative to receive $10,000, but it depends entirely on the court because only a court can make such an award.

Whether a corporation is liable for millions of $ or billions of , the Mayer Law Group has the know-how to make them pay.

I really hope that they keep the option for a matte screen open when the upgraded MacBook Pros finally arrive.

I have been waiting a while now to upgrade to a MacBook Pro but have held off primarily as i would like to see if the enclosure gets a few nips and tucks a la Macbook!

The switchable HD bay would be awesome, and the magnetic latch and updated keyboard also would be nice but PLEASE DO NOT make glossy screen a standard on Pro notebooks!

I have a few friends who own PC laptops with glossy screens and all of them have keyboards imprinted on their screens! I cannot say from experience if this happens with the MacBooks but i'd rather not risk it....
